If you don't use a digital twin, what are the alternatives?

Updated: Jan 26, 2023

If you don't use a digital twin, there are alternative solutions that organisations can use to manage and optimise their physical assets.

The alternatives include:

Physical Testing and Experimentation: Organisations can conduct physical tests and experiments to gain a better understanding of how their assets perform and to identify opportunities for optimisation. This can be time-consuming and expensive and may not be possible for certain types of assets.

Data Analysis: Organisations can use data analytics to gain insights into the performance of their assets. This can involve using data from sensors, computer-aided design models, and other sources to identify patterns and trends. However, this approach may not provide a complete understanding of how the assets operate and interact with other systems.

Manual Monitoring and Inspection: Organisations can manually monitor and inspect their assets to identify issues and plan for maintenance and repairs. This can be labour-intensive and may not provide a complete understanding of how the assets perform over time.

Emulation: Some organisations can use emulation software to simulate the behaviour of the physical systems, but it's limited to the parameters and conditions set by the software, it can't provide real-time monitoring as it's a pre-programmed simulation.

These alternatives can be useful, but they may not provide the same level of detail and accuracy as a digital twin. Also, a digital twin can provide a holistic view of the system, including real-time monitoring and simulation capabilities.
