techUK’s Central Government Council - voting is NOW OPEN

We are delighted to say that Dr. Robert E. Smith, BOXARR’s CTO, has been nominated to become a member of techUK’s Central Government Council.

BOXARR is a proud member of techUK, a trade organisation charged with representing tech industries in the UK. Their Central Government Council aims to ensure that techUK delivers a vibrant engagement programme with central Government departments, promotes better engagement between the tech sector and Government to support civil servants earlier in the procurement process, provides leadership and support on techUK’s campaigns and projects to reform public sector procurement, and promotes the transformative role tech can play in public services.

Commenting on the nomination, Dr. Smith highlighted that:

“BOXARR is a small, but exciting and fast-growing UK high-technology SME with broad experience in the UK and overseas. While the majority of the impact BOXARR has had thus far is in defence and aerospace, its technology is designed to have a positive impact in any sector where complexity is proving to be a critical challenge. The UK public sector certainly qualifies, and building on our established experience, BOXARR’s capabilities and experience can clearly provide perspective on those challenges in the UK public sector. Nomination for the Central Government Council provides an important opportunity for our company’s perspective to provide a beneficial impact, and I’d be proud to serve that mission.”

How does it work?

One vote per techUK member company can be entered at this site. Of the 20 open council positions, 10 are reserved for small to medium-sized industries (SMEs) like BOXARR.

Voting will close on Friday the 1st of February.

About Dr. Robert Elliott Smith, PhD

Mr. Smith is a CTO of BOXARR, a Bristol based software company with major UK and international customers, including Rolls Royce, Airbus, Boeing, the MoD, and many others. Also Senior Research Fellow of Computer Science at University College London, and author of over 35 journal articles, 10 invited book chapters, and over 75 conference papers.

Has conducted research projects for The EU, DERA, British Aerospace, Airbus, British Telecom, The Bank of England, and The Competitive Market Authority, The U.S. Army Strategic Defense Command, Los Alamos and Oak Ridge National Laboratories, NASA, Boeing, NSF, EPSRC.

Noted lecturer on technology’s impact on society, author of an upcoming Bloomsbury book on the subject, and contributor to UK Computing Research Committee’s Grand Challenges for Computing, and UCL’s Written Evidence to UK House of Commons Select Committee on Algorithms in Decision Making.

Statement

Dr. Smith is able to bring together academic insight, real-world engineering experience, and executive experience in a technology business that he has helped grow from a startup to a firm serving major industries that impact the UK economy. He has worked for over 30 years on artificial intelligence, with experience spanning many facets right from it’s pre-internet history through to present day applications in the real World.

Dr. Smith is also an expert on the history of computing and its impacts on society (a topic that forms the core of much of his published and upcoming work).

With a focus on the fact that algorithms and A.I. will likely have a broad social impact over the coming few decades, Dr. Smith’s practical, historical, theoretical and business experience with those technologies can make a substantial and unique contribution to the Council of techUK’s Government Group.
